One of my articles was posted in the August SARC newsletter
In a Recent facebook survey of SARC members asking for Northeastern Ohio’s best running landmarks as per our members.
Sand Run Metro Park is well loved by many of our members including Calvin Stout and, Jerry Lynch saying “Sand Run is hard six miles, plowed a lot of the winter, same people a lot of the time. It’s like a running community inside a running community. I have run into people where we have both recognized each other and realized it’s from Sand Run”.
Many of you hold special memories in the landmark of the Big Indian at Merriman and Portage Path. For Crystal Uhl the Big Indian is special because that location marks one of her first running victories Big Indian to the Mustill store and back. The scenery is also a big bonus.
The view of the river at Lock 29 in Peninsula is an inspiration for Stphani Itibrout because “I feel like I need to take a picture because it’s so beautiful”. Brittany Tyler likes the challenge and beauty of the Salt Run at Pine Hollow during all seasons. Andrea Nikki Drobik lists Lock 29 as one of her favorites along with these must see landmarks Hudson Springs Park, Kelly’s Island, Put in Bay and the Perry Peace monument. Other monument mentions were from Barbara Meadows running the loop around the McKinley Monument around and thru the Stadium Park saying “So proud to be from Canton, and run with Canton run groups”.
Closer to Akron Goodyear Heights Metro Park has “great trails to train on, with lots of hills and flats” per Kim Watkins. Champion bike trail 30+ miles to Lake Erie is one of Erin Burns favorites where she does a lot of her miles of running. Other local mentions were Silver Lake to Munroe Falls to Kent great for training runs, and the Freedom Trail in Tallmadge because they are partly or mostly paved surfaces. One not to forget in the fall is Beckwith Farms in Portage County.
The Buckeye Trail from Blue Hen Falls North to Snowville Road were mentioned by Douglas Paroff as “challenging, serene, beautiful and scenic”. If you are not already running some of the area landmarks and favorite locations of SARC members make sure to try some of the ones listed for a new running experience. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park including the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath with the trails and landmarks of Northeastern Ohio really show the beauty of what Ohio has to offer its runners. Now let’s go run!
